Rwanda, Ghana Explore Cooperation in Gold and Minerals Trading During Visit to GoldBod
Chief Executive Officer of the Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board (RMB), Ms. Alice Uwase, accompanied by the High Commissioner of Rwanda to Ghana, H.E. Rosemary Mbabazi, visited the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) and held talks with its Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, and members of the Board’s senior management.
The discussions explored opportunities for the exchange of expertise and stronger collaboration between Rwanda and Ghana in the mining sector.
CEO Uwase said the visit was aimed at learning from Ghana’s strategy and achievements as Rwanda restructures its own mining sector, particularly in trading. She noted that while Ghana’s focus is largely on gold, Rwanda’s is on the 3Ts and other technology minerals, including tantalum and tungsten, which she said place the country among the world’s leading producers of tungsten.

CEO Sammy Gyamfi briefed the delegation on the reforms behind the Gold Board, which was established to centralise the regulation of gold trading in Ghana. He said the reforms have brought significant gains, with small-scale gold exports rising sharply in 2025 and continuing to grow this year, contributing to foreign exchange earnings and macroeconomic stability. He added that the Board is now focusing on local refining and value addition, with a growing share of small-scale gold being refined in Ghana, and on traceability and formalisation going forward.
CEO Uwase described Rwanda’s efforts to formalise artisanal mining through cooperatives, attract large-scale investors, take equity in mining projects and develop national champions. She added that Rwanda is building value addition capacity, including gold and tantalum refineries, and is working to improve the corporate governance of cooperatives to attract financing.
