University of Rwanda awarded Excellence in Health Prize by Mastercard Foundation
The University of Rwanda (UR) was among five African Universities awarded by the Mastercard Foundation at the inaugural Africa Higher Education for Transformation Prize. UR received the Excellence in Health Award in recognition of its contribution to training Rwanda’s health workforce and national transformation
The award was received in Accra by the University’s Vice Chancellor Prof. Didas Muganga who was accompanied by the Principal of the College of Medicine. High Commissioner Mrs. Rosemary Mbabazi and Dr. Edward Kadozi, Director General of the Higher Education Council of Rwanda were also present.
Accepting the honour, Prof. Kayihura said it would support ongoing efforts to consolidate and scale up the College’s work of empowering health professionals.
Reflecting on the country’s journey, he noted that Rwanda’s healthcare system which had been severely devasted by the consequences of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi is now going beyond emergency response to build sustainably.

He pointed to the 4x4 programme, which aims to quadruple the country’s health workforce within four years, as a major part of this effort.
Prof. Kayihura added that the recognition would encourage the University to build on its current work, expand it, and help improve health systems across Africa.
“We are extremely excited and grateful for the award,” he stated.
The Africa Higher Education for Transformation Prize is an initiative of the Mastercard Foundation. It honours African universities that drive systemic institutional change and expand opportunities for young people.
