Government of Ghana announces plans to set up a monument in honour of victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi
Ghana’s Deputy Minister of Tourism and Creative Arts, Honourable Ussif Issaka Jajah, representing the Government of Ghana at the ceremony to celebrate the 31st anniversary of Rwanda’s Liberation Day held in Accra on 12th July 2025 announced that President John Mahama has approved the construction of a monument in Ghana in tribute to the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
This monument, once unveiled, will bear strong testimony to Ghana’s historical role when its contingent in the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR) in 1994 stayed in the country and helped save thousands of innocent civilians even after the UN called its forces to evacuate.
Honorable Jajah said that this monument will serve not only as a solemn space of remembrance but also as a platform for education, reflection, and reconciliation.
The announcement was made during Honourable Jajah’s keynote address at the Liberation Day celebration, which for the first time brought together Rwandans from across six countries of Ghana, Togo, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Benin and Cote d’Ivoire, where Rwanda is represented by its Diplomatic Mission in Accra, Ghana.
Coming physically together for the first in the five years since the establishment of the High Commission in Ghana, Rwandans celebrated the country’s progress, the unity of her people and the strong fraternal relations that exist with their respective host countries.
The Rwandan community was joined at the ceremony by over 200 other attendees including senior officials from the Government of Ghana, members of the diplomatic corps, leaders from the private sector, academia, civil society organizations, media representatives, and security service agencies.
Speaking about Rwanda’s remarkable recovery, High Commissioner Rosemary Mbabazi said: “From the ashes of despair, we have built a nation anchored in dignity, accountability, equity, and progress.”
She expressed gratitude to Rwanda’s international partners, especially fellow African nations like Ghana, for their continued friendship and commitment to South-South Cooperation, which she described as vital to building stronger societies and resilient economies.
Also in his remarks, Hon. Ussif Jajah expressed Ghana’s heartfelt congratulations to Rwanda on its liberation milestone.
He highlighted Rwanda’s post-genocide transformation under the leadership of President Paul Kagame, calling it a powerful testimony to the impact of visionary and effective leadership.
The occasion was enriched by a vibrant display of Rwandan culture, with Itorero Urugangazi Ballet captivating guests through traditional dance and music, showcasing Rwanda’s enduring spirit and rich heritage.
