High Commissioner meets Ghana's Army Chief
The High Commissioner of Rwanda in Ghana, H.E. Rosemary Mbabazi on Monday March 11, 2024 paid a courtesy call on the Chief of Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces, Lt. Gen.Thomas Oppong-Peprah at his office and to congratulate him on his new appointment.
Lt. Gen. Oppong-Peprah was appointed Chief of Defence Staff by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in January 2024 to replace Vice Admiral Seth Amoama, who retired from the Ghana Armed Forces after 40 years of service.
Rwanda and Ghana have a long-standing ties and the courtesy visit also enabled the two leaders to formally introduce themselves to each other as they work to strengthen the partnership between the two countries.
In his remarks, Lt. Gen. Oppong-Peprah warmly welcomed the High Commissioner and reassured her of the commitment of the Ghana Armed Forces to continue the defence and military cooperation with Rwanda Defence Force.
He talked up the good relations Ghana has with Rwanda and the need to further enhance the existing cooperation on various fronts including defence and intelligence exchanges.
On her part, High Commissioner Mbabazi congratulated Lt. Gen. Oppong-Peprah on his promotion and expressed appreciation for the military cooperation between Rwanda and Ghana.
She added: “We are delighted that we already have a strong relation between the two countries and we are looking forward to having more partnership.”
She recalled the decision of the Ghanaian contingent within the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda to stay and save lives during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
“Rwanda appreciates what Ghana did. A friend in need is a friend indeed and Ghana is one of the best friends of Rwanda. The decision of the Ghanaian contingent to stay and save lives despite the withdrawal of the UN peacekeepers is something we really appreciate,” she said.
In April 7, Rwanda will commemorate 30 years of the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda and High Commissioner invited the CDS and Ghana Armed Forces to join Rwandans living in Ghana in the solemn event held every year to remember the over one million lives who were killed.
